Why do children need to visit a dentist?

Having good oral health in childhood will help general health in adulthood that means healthier teeth and gums. It is much better to teach good oral hygiene to your child at an early age when they are young so it will become a good habit for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, more than half of children age 6 having some tooth decay according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, hence practice good oral hygiene is very important for children.

In the first visit, the dentist will do a regular exam to see how teeth and jaws are growing, then check the health of teeth and gums.

Then the dentist will talk to you and your child and give advice about how to prevent cavities by having healthy food and good dental hygiene.

What age is the best for children to visit a dentist?

The best time for your child to see a dentist for the first time is after appearing their first teeth or reaching 12 months old. Although, most parents think it is unnecessary to visit a dentist until their child has a full set of teeth that is around 3 years old, however this is incorrect.

It is much better your child visit a dentist earlier because in the first visit the dentist will check the medical history and will discuss with you about:

  • Your child teething
  • Effective brushing techniques
  • Bite and how your child’s teeth come together
  • The dentist will talk about the thumb sucking habit, if necessary
  • Talk about the risk of decay and how to prevent it
  • Prevention of traumatic injury to your child’s mouth
  • Nutritional advice

It’s recommended, your children see a dentist every 6 months after their first visit. It will be beneficial for both children and parents and will help them to gain important oral hygiene skills for life.
