Gentle Wisdom Teeth Removals in Fortitude Valley

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the latest permanent teeth that appear when you’re 17 to 25 years old. It’s important to note that some people won’t have wisdom teeth at all. But in most cases, these erupt just like a molar and they won’t cause any problem.

The problem appears when wisdom teeth are impacted and they don’t have enough room to develop properly. When that happens, they will have a partial eruption or they won’t erupt at all.

Most of us have 4 wisdom teeth, one in each corner. You don’t need to remove them usually if they grow in completely, they are positioned correctly, are healthy and you can easily clean them. However, this won’t happen all the time, and that’s when you need to address the issue as fast as possible.

When does a wisdom tooth need to be removed?

The main issue with wisdom teeth is the fact that they can end up not erupting properly, and that can become a major issue. Partial eruptions can be painful and dangerous, since they can damage roots or even bring in bone support problems.

In addition, the wisdom tooth might crowd the nearby teeth. If your wisdom tooth doesn’t have enough room to come out, it might damage the nearby teeth and they can become crowded. That’s a major issue, and one of the main reasons why the wisdom tooth needs to be removed.

Most dentists recommend removing the wisdom tooth if it doesn’t fully emerge, and ideally, you want to do that at a younger age. Otherwise, the bone and roots are fully formed, and the recovery process can take a lot more time.

If you experience extensive dental decay, gum disease, tumors, cysts, repeated infections or pain near your wisdom tooth, this is also a sign that you need to have it removed. Try to do that as quickly as possible to avoid any future issues.

What does the procedure involve?

  • Initially, you will receive a local anesthetic in order to numb the area around your wisdom tooth. You might feel some pressure before your wisdom tooth is removed.
  • The dentist will try to widen the tooth socket via rocking it back and forth. In some cases, a small cut in the gum is needed, since the wisdom tooth might need to be cut into pieces before it gets removed. It’s quite common for this to happen.
  • The procedure can take up to 20 minutes, sometimes even more. After the wisdom tooth is removed, the patient may feel some discomfort and swelling.

How soon will I recover?

The recovery process can take anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks or more. It depends on your age, how many wisdom teeth you get removed at once, and your healing capabilities. But you can expect the recovery process to take quite a bit of time, depending on the situation.

It’s very important to remove your wisdom tooth if it starts crowding and damaging other teeth. The same thing can be said if it’s partially erupted and it brings in constant pain. This is a great procedure and it can help prevent any severe problems in the long term!
